Coquina and Cap Rock

Cemented shell and limestone layers turn up across Florida at unpredictable depths, and they are the reason a method chosen from experience rather than borings goes wrong.

Send the geotechnical report and the site plan. You get a written read on the water, the excavation and the risk.

The variable that decides the schedule in Florida

The layer that ends a method

A cap rock layer will refuse sheet piles and stop driven piles outright. It is also frequently discontinuous, so borings in one corner of the site say little about the other. Mobilizing a driving rig against a profile nobody checked is one of the more expensive mistakes available on a Florida site.

What it rules in and out

  • Driven piles and sheets frequently refuse. Confirm depth and continuity first.
  • Drilled methods — secant, auger cast — handle it far better.
  • Excavation may need breaking or rock trenching, which is slow and loud.
  • Its own permeability can be high through fissures, complicating dewatering.
  • Depth varies across a site, so more borings are worth the money.

How we handle it

  1. 01Read every boring, not the summary, and look at the variability.
  2. 02Where coverage is thin, ask for additional borings before pricing.
  3. 03Select drilled methods where refusal is a real risk.
  4. 04Plan breaking and vibration exposure for neighbors.

Rock at a shallow depth is not automatically bad news — it can be an excellent bearing stratum and shorten the foundations considerably. What is bad news is finding it after the method has been chosen and the rig is on site.

FAQ

Common questions

Will sheets go through coquina?
Usually not. It is a common cause of refusal and a reason to check the borings early.
Is rock good news?
Often — as a bearing stratum it can shorten foundations. It is only bad news when it is a surprise.
How many borings do we need?
More than a small site plan suggests, because the layer is discontinuous. Ask the geotechnical engineer.
Does rock stop water?
Not reliably. Fissured limestone can be very permeable.
