Where sheets will not go

Sheet piling is efficient and fast when the ground cooperates. It stops cooperating in two conditions that are common here: cemented layers or coquina rock that will not let a sheet through, and sites where vibration is unacceptable because of what is next door. Either condition rules the method out, and finding that at mobilization is expensive.

When sheets are the right call

  • Saturated granular soil where a cut-off is worth as much as the retention.
  • Depths where a cantilever or a single line of bracing will do.
  • Sites with room to drive and to extract afterwards.
  • Temporary works, where recovering the steel changes the economics.
  • Waterfront and seawall work, where cut-off is the point.

How we handle it

  1. 01Check the borings for refusal layers before committing to the method.
  2. 02Assess vibration exposure for adjacent structures.
  3. 03Select driven or vibratory installation for the setting.
  4. 04Design bracing or tiebacks where cantilever will not hold.
  5. 05Monitor movement and vibration through installation.
  6. 06Extract and make good, or cut off and leave, per the design.

Being able to pull the sheets afterwards is a real part of the cost case on temporary works. On a site where extraction is impossible because of what has been built against them, that saving disappears and the comparison against other methods changes. Work it out at design stage, not at demobilization.

Common questions

Are sheets removed afterwards?
On temporary works usually yes, and the recovery is part of the cost case. Sometimes access makes it impossible — decide at design.
How noisy is it?
Vibratory installation is significant. On a sensitive site that alone can rule the method out.
Do sheets stop water?
The interlocks give a substantial cut-off. Not perfectly watertight, but often enough to change the dewatering design.
What if we hit rock?
Sheets refuse. That is why the borings are read before the method is chosen.
